Spurned Duke Polinesso seeks revenge, deceiving Ariodante with a staged tryst between himself and Ginevra's attendant, Dalinda, disguised as Ginevra. Despairing, Ariodante contemplates suicide. The King learns of the alleged betrayal, condemning Ginevra to death unless a knight defends her honor.
