An Artist Haven – The Journey to The North Village Art District
Columbians all have one thing in common: A love and admiration for art.
In the 60s, 70s and 80s the area around Wabash Train Station was mainly home to industrial buildings. Now, tucked away in downtown Columbia, resides beside many local businesses is the hub where artful magic happens - The North Village Arts District.
In 2010, a group of six or seven artists created the non-profit, North Village Art District. Without their vision, we wouldn’t have this place of self-expression where the community comes together to share their love for art. Some have even called the area “an artist haven”.
All year long, art patrons can take a stroll through The District Downtown and enjoy monthly First Fridays Art Walks where businesses open their doors to invite the community in to take a gander around the store or gallery. While walking down Walnut Avenue you may have the pleasure of encountering a variety of pop-up shops, live music performances and even flame jugglers.
The best part of being in the North Village Arts District is that no matter your age or interest, there’s an opportunity to connect with others and embrace the dynamic art on display. And it’s all thanks to the vision those artists who wanted to enrich the quality of life in Columbia.
