Timid housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) joins her friend Louise (Susan Sarandon), a sharp-tongued waitress, on a weekend getaway to a fishing cabin in Arkansas. Their weekend plans fall apart when Louise shoots and kills a man for attempting to rape Thelma. Certain that their fate will be sealed due to incriminating evidence and sexist law enforcement, Louise and Thelma decide to become fugitives and flee to Mexico. On the road to freedom, the two encounter a handsome, young thief (Brad Pitt) and a compassionate detective (Harvey Keitel) who each test the women's commitment to one another. Nominated for six Academy Awards, and winning one for Best Screenplay, Thelma & Louise has endured as cinema's ultimate ode to ride-or-die female friendship.
